Biography:

Azza El-Hassan

 Azza El-Hassan is an independent filmmaker. Her work has been produced and shown by various international TV networks such as BBC, arte, YLE, ARD and many others. It has also been screened in film festivals and art venues around the world like, Yamamgata Documentary Film Festival (Japan), International Film Festival IDFA (Holland), Lipzic (Germany) and many others.

El-Hassan is the winner of the 2006 Luchino Visconti Award - the Silver Hydrangea “Mediterranean Sensibilities,"; the 2002 Grierson Award for Best New Comer (The British Documentaries Awards, BBC); and the 2001 Jury Award (Arab Screen Independent Film Festival/ Documentary and Short Films) Al-Jazeera Channel, Qatar.

She has been a member of a Jury at several art and film events such as Dubai film festival, 2012, Royal, film Commission feature film script competition, 2008, Docudays documentary film festival 2006, Amnesty International Doen Award and the International Documentary Film Festival IDFA, Holland 2002, the Digital Art Unesco competition, Japan 2003.

She is currently in production, for her feature documentary “Love & Revenge”, which is being produced by Mischief, Austria, financed by: Media (EU) & German Film Fund (Filmstuftung), Al-Jazeraa International, ORF (Austrian Television) RTS (Swiss Television).

She is also developing her fiction feature film which it’s script “Musical Chairs” has so far received, the 2010 Torino film Lab production award the 2009 development award at the Berlinale Talent Co-Production Market and the 2008 Carthage Film Festival script award.

El-Hassan has written articles, which have been published by various film and art magazines, likes, “ The Power of the Arab Spectator & the rise of Arab Nationalism”,  Cahiers Cinema, Art Magazine n44, Spain, 2011."Art and War", Unplugged, ARS Electronica Centre, Museum of the Future, "Art as the Scene of Global Conflict". Linz, Austria. 2002 "Filming Home from Exile", Framework: The Journal of Cinema & Media.

She holds an MA in Television Documentary, from GoldSmiths College, University of London (1995) and a BA in Film and Television Studies and Sociology from Glasgow University, Scotland (1994).
