MEDIS presented at Rome's Mediterranean film festival

More than 300 professionals assisted a presentation about MEDIS, the first network of film South Mediterranean film distributors, during the 19th edition of the Med Film Fest in Rome last week.

Valerio Caruso, from the Euromed Audiovisual programme, presented the network as part of a conference about Euro-Mediterranean film distribution.

Speakers included Silvia Costa, member of the European Parliament, Nicola Borrelli, director of Italy's National Film Centre, and Habib Attia, a Tunisian producer.

Costa recalled that the European Union's new programme Creative Europe will bring together the older MEDIA, MEDIA Plus and Culture programmes.

“As the European Parliament, we are fighting to maintain the specificity of the audiovisual sector within the new programme,” she said. “We also want to enlarge the programme to non-European countries to reinforce cooperation with neighbouring countries.”

“We hope that this first meeting will be the first of many,” declared Ginella Vocca, the festival's president. “Distribution is a key problem in Europe and Mediterranean countries. Initiatives like MEDIS are welcome and I hope that our festival can become a member of such interesting network.”

MEDIS will next be presented in Paris next Monday, July 1, at the Arab World Institute (Institut du monde arabe) at a conference on the promotion and distribution of Arab films.
