South Mediterranean titles and film professionals to animate Montpellier

Over 30 South Mediterranean titles are to screen at the 35th Cinemed International Mediterranean Film Festival from October 25 to November 2, starting with Palestinian brothers Arab and Tarzan Nasser's Cannes-selected short Condom Lead on the opening evening.

But Euromed Audiovisual, notably through its MEDIS South Mediterranean film distribution network and DOCmed documentary producer development programme, is also to take an active role in discussing film production and distribution in the Mediterranean region at the event.

With a jury presided over by Egyptian Cannes-nominee Yousry Nasrallah, the festival's main competition is to see films from Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Palestine and even Syria compete for the Antigone d’Or this year. Contenders are notably to include Egyptian director Ahmad Abdalla's Rags and Tatters, Moroccan director Hicham Lasri's They Are the DogsLadder to Damascus, a Syria-Lebanon-Qatar coproduction directed by Syrian director Mohamed Malas, Palestinian director Rani Massalah's Girafada and Israeli director Adam Sanderson's Funeral at Noon.

Moroccan filmmaker Karima Zoubir’s Camera/Woman, a documentary supported by Euromed Audiovisual's ACCESS training programme about an illiterate divorcee who works as a camerawoman, is also to compete in the documentary competition.

This year, the festival is to hold a special tribute to Egyptian producers Marianne and Gabriel Khoury from Misr International Films, the company they set up with renowned director Youssef Chahine that has held Cairo's Panorama of the European Film since 2008 and is, since last December, a member of film distribution network MEDIS. Several of their productions are to screen throughout the festival.

Beyond a round table on Egyptian cinema on November 1, here are some other events to look out for:

  • On Tuesday, October 29, from 10:30 am to 1pm, in partnership with DOCmed, the major partners of Mediterranean documentary and fiction films will speak about their editorial lines and any support they offer Mediterranean film projects. (Espace Joffre 1 - Le Corum)
  • On Tuesday, October 29, from 02:30 pm to 06:00 pm, presentation of the projects selected for grants (Sallon Joffre - Hotel Crowne Plazza/inscription).
  • On Wednesday, October 30, from 10:30 am to 1 pm, conference on the state of Mediterranean filmmaking today with Serge Lalou as moderator (Espace Joffre 1 - Le Corum).
  • On Wednesday, October 30, from 3 pm, the South Mediterranean region’s first film distribution network, MEDIS, will hold a meeting. (Espace Joffre 1 - Le Corum)
  • On Wednesday, October 30, from 02:30 pm to 06:00 pm, presentations, part 2.
  • On Thursday, October 31, from 10:30 am to 1 pm, MEDIS member Daniel Ziskind will host a seminar on film distribution prospects in the Mediterranean region, in partnership with Euromed Audiovisual. The event will specifically try to tackle two questions: Are there any best practices that could be transposed to the region, such as that of the ACID (Agence du Cinéma Indépendant pour sa Diffusion) in France? Could we contemplate using video-on-demand platforms across the Mediterranean region? (Espace Joffre 1 - Le Corum)
  • South Mediterranean documentaries made with support of DOCmed are also to screen throughout the festival.
