EUROPA CINEMAS, which was granted a community funding amounting to 4.6 million euros, supported the exhibition, distribution, and promotion of European and Mediterranean films. In many EU countries, the small number of independent distribution companies is episodically exhibiting a few « artistic » films per year while cutting down their overheads. Therefore, a very limited amount of films are able to gain a significant market share. Besides, the exhibition sector, concerned with making cost effective due to its fixed costs, gets rid of commercial risks and feels better with general public films that sell easily. Europa Cinemas is a solution to the lack of European and Mediterranean films on cinema screens. The project is therefore an incentive tool for cultural diversity. In real terms, Europa Cinemas fosters exhibitors and distributors’ risk-taking while refunding 50 % of the promotion and marketing costs on European and Mediterranean films.
Europa Cinemas’ action tackled all 27 countries of the partnership:
In the Mediterranean countries. Regarding the support to distribution in the Mediterranean countries, Europa Cinemas backed up 162 European or Mediterranean films (including 128 different titles) which amounted to 856 copies. 35 distribution companies were supported in 10 Mediterranean countries. Between 2000 and 2004, Europa Cinemas backed up 41 cinemas totalling 73 screens in 25 cities and 9 Mediterranean countries. Almost 8 million people went to the cinemas belonging to the network in the Mediterranean countries to see Mediterranean and European films.
In Europe. Europa Cinemas supported 163 European cinemas for the Mediterranean programming between 2000 and 2003. Almost 700.000 people went to see Mediterranean films in those cinemas.
