Euromed Audiovisual to send young Libyan filmmaker to Cannes

Euromed Audiovisual is to contribute a trip to Cannes as a prize, hold film screenings, and organise a day for aspiring documentary filmmakers at the Libya Movie Awards from April 25 to 27.

The competition for short films by young Libyan filmmakers was launched this year by the Italian Culture Institute in Libya, in partnership with the European Union.

Thanks to a partnership with Euromed Audiovisual, a special prize will now be awarded to the best short film in the competition made by a professional filmmaker. The winner will be invited to attend this year's Cannes International Film Festival and the festival's Short Film Corner, together with the three winners of Euromed Audiovisual's MADE in MED film competition, whose names are to be revealed very soon.

An international jury made up of Libyan directors and film critics as well as European filmmakers is to select the other winners, to be awarded with professional tools to boost their career.

The competition aims to stimulate the creation of a Libyan film industry and to nurture a community of filmmakers, as well as to discover new talents and to provide a venue for ideas on social issues in Libya after the revolution.

Participants in the short film competition must be Libyan nationals and preferably active since the revolution. They are invited to submit a new film especially created for the occasion before April 20.

Workshops and screenings

During the three-day festival, to last from April 25 to 27, European guests will offer morning workshops and lectures about filmmaking, while prize-winning short films will be shown in the afternoon.

The three winners of Euromed Audiovisual's MADE in MED short film will also be screened, as will a documentary from the Arab region that was supported by one of its training initiatives.

On April 28, Euromed Audiovisual and DOCmed, a training initiative for Arab documentary film professionals that it supports, will hold an event to provide useful information to aspiring Libyan documentary filmmakers.
