Euromed Audiovisual to attend London's Film Africa 2013

Euromed Audiovisual is to attend London's Film Africa for the first time this year on Sunday, where it is to introduce the event's guests the results for its data collection project on South Mediterranean film and audiovisual markets.

During the festival's industry forum The Business of Film in Africa, Dr. Sahar Ali will review progresses made in gathering data from South Mediterranean countries, with a particular focus on findings for the film markets in Egypt and Morocco.

These figures include: the number of films produced until 2012 and box office results, the number of film theatres per inhabitants, and the number of films co-produced in the South Mediterranean region.

Over the last few years, the Euromed Audiovisual III programme has focused on collecting data on the film and audiovisual markets in the South Mediterranean region - Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Palestine and Tunisia - in cooperation with the European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO).

So far, the programme has launched reports on its findings for Morocco, Lebanon, and Egypt. A report on Jordan will be published soon, and reports on other countries from the region are expected within the next months.

Such an initiative not only improves understanding of the South Mediterranean region's film and audiovisual markets, but also provides the relevant decision-makers with reliable data to set up new policies and to promote sound investments.

At this forum, Dr. Sahar Ali will also present the South Mediterranean Film Catalogue launched at Cannes 2013 to boost the promotion of films from the region. The catalogue gathers information about 130 fiction and documentary films produced in the region between 2011 and 2013, for which it aims to create unprecedented global market appeal during this special chapter of the region's history.

Three celebrated documentaries from North Africa are to screen among 60 feature and documentary films selected for Film Africa 2013: Ismaël and Youssef Chebbi' and Ala Eddine Slim's Babylon (2012) and Sami Tlili's Cursed be the Phosphate (2012) from Tunisia, as well as Leila Kilani's On The Edge (2011) from Morocco.

The Euromed Audiovisual presentation is to be held on November 3, from 11 to 12 am at the British Film Institute Southbank's Blue Room. To book, please send an email to info@filmafrica.org.uk.
