Financing working group: supporting the development of market and audience oriented audiovisual works

During their meeting on 17 and 18 November at the Carthage Film Festival (Journées cinématographiques de Carthage JCC 2012), the south-Mediterranean audiovisual and film professionals recommended to support sustainable development of audiovisual works and searching for audiences as early as the script is written. Furthermore they recommended to include measures facilitating market access in addition to financial assistance.

The meeting of the financing working group, established by Euromed Audiovisual III programme, was dedicated to development, and nourished by the conclusions of a comparative study carried out by Mohannad Al Bakri (Jordan). The members wereanalysing the support available at this starting phase of the projects, and evaluating best practices. The study will go online on the program website soon. It reviews the available support for the development in the region as well as the international assistance for Arab projects and the co-production markets offering development grants.

The financing working group, within the capacity development support unit of the Euromed Audiovisual III, is an essential part of the program action aiming at supporting production and co-production. Its work consists implementing a new financial mechanism together with south Mediterranean professionals. The news financial mechanism shall enhance regional co-production in the south Mediterranean region.

The first meeting of the Group was held during the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. It established the following working principles: to work on a mechanism that supports projects throughout the entire production cycle, from script writing to all-screen distribution; to prioritize audience-oriented projects and to propose a sustainable development model. The next meeting of the financing working group will be held at the end of January 2013 and will address the production, co-production, distribution and promotion support of films and audiovisual works.
