Arab cinema experts to meet in Casablanca on June 20 and 21

The European Union's Euromed Audiovisual III programme and the European Audiovisual Observatory (EAO), in collaboration with the Moroccan Film Centre, are to bring together cinema experts from the South Mediterranean region in Casablanca on June 20 and 21.

The meeting is to focus on the importance of statistics to better understand cinema in the region as an economic activity that provides jobs and creates valuable cultural products for export. Reliable data on this economic sector not only allows decision-makers to set ambitious policies to boost national film industries, such as in Morocco, but is also essential for fruitful cross-regional and cross-Mediterranean cooperation.

The Casablanca meeting in particular aims to explore various options to sustain a Euromed Audiovisual and European Audiovisual Observatory-led project to collect and publish data about the film industry in the South Mediterranean region after the end of the Euromed Audiovisual III programme in January 2014.

So far, the project has produced reports for Morocco, Lebanon, and Egypt. Reports on other countries from the region are expected by the end of the year.

At the event, cinema experts from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia are to present an overview of film production and distribution in their countries, before discussing how best to continue gathering making available data on the region's film sector.

They will be able to discuss options with representatives from the European Commission, the UNESCO's Institute for Statistics, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), the European Audiovisual Observatory, the French National Film Centre (CNC) and Médiasalles.
