Med Culture: supporting Morocco in developing its cultural sector

Following two roundtable consultations held in Rabat with the Moroccan authorities and stakeholders in the cultural sector in March, the EU-funded regional programme Med Culture is organising the first meeting of a national focus group on development of the cultural sector in Morocco on November 14 in Rabat.

The national focus group, which includes representatives of the Moroccan authorities and actors in the culture sector, will work closely with the Med Culture programme on themes and activities aimed at developing the cultural sector in Morocco and the countries of the southern Mediterranean, including:

  • Training sessions among fashion schools and their counterparts in Lebanon and Tunisia to develop exchanges between professionals in order to boost employability.
  • A workshop on initial and ongoing training in cultural and arts management.
  • A training workshop for the authorities on the development of a national strategic plan for culture.

The meeting will be in two parts: a detailed presentation by the programme team on activities planned in the coming months, followed by a training workshop on one of the regional priorities: advocacy and lobbying. The aim of the training is to provide participants with the necessary tools to promote the Moroccan culture sector and to initiate a joint effort between policy makers and cultural actors to create favorable working conditions for cultural development across the kingdom.

The second activity on the agenda is part of the programme’s objective of strengthening the exchange of best practices among cultural actors in the countries of the South Mediterranean region.

It is aimed at facilitating the networking of professionals from Lebanon, Tunisia and Algeria with their Moroccan colleagues and those attending the launch of the event « Etats Généraux de la Culture au Maroc », organised by the association ‘Racines’ with the support of the ministry of culture at the National Library on Wednesday 12 November.

Med Culture is a regional EU-funded programme that kicked off in February with the aim of sustaining the creation of institutional and social environments propitious to culture as a vector for freedom of expression and sustainable development. This should be accomplished by reinforcing the capacities of the public and private cultural sectors as vectors for democratisation, and economic and social development for societies in the Southern Mediterranean.

Med Culture is part of the regional programme "Media and culture for development in the Southern Mediterranean" which has been allocated a total budget of €17 million over a four-year period, of which €9 million is for the award of grants on a co-financing basis, and €8 million for one capacity-development mechanism on media (Med Media) and one capacity development mechanism on culture.
